SWITCH HOME BROADBAND
How much could you save by switching broadband provider?
Migrating from one ADSL provider to another:
The most common type of Broadband is ADSL (connection via your phone line). If you have this, you'll need to:
Step 1: Ensure that you are outside of the minimum contract period with you current provider, (usually 12 months). If unsure, check the terms and conditions of your contract. If you try to leave before hand, it is likely you will be charged a cancellation fee.
Step 2: Contact your provider and inform them that you wish to change providers. Be sure to write down the MAC number they provide, as you cannot switch without this. (Also be aware that these MAC numbers expire after 30 days and if the transfer hasn't taken place during this period you'll need to contact them for a new number).
Step 3: Order your new Broadband and inform your new provider that you already have Broadband and notify them of your MAC number.
The process may vary slightly depending on your provider but typically the new provider will take over from here. During the switchover, you should expect little or no downtime.
Switching from Cable to ADSL Broadband:
If you wish to transfer from Cable to ADSL broadband, you'll need to have the following things:
- An active BT phone line
- An ADSL modem (this will generally be supplied free by your new provider)
- A USB or Ethernet connection on your PC
Once you have everything in place, contact your new provider.
It can take around 10 days to activate your ADSL service. Your equipment will be posted to you with install instructions. To avoid downtime, you can keep your cable connection active until your ADSL connection has been activated.
Switching from ADSL to Cable Broadband:
If you wish to transfer from ADSL to Cable Broadband the cable company will provide you with everything you need. However, cable is not available everywhere, so please use our broadband comparison tool to find out if cable is available in your area.
Cable broadband uses a separate cable (other than your telephone line) coming into your home, so it will not affect your telephone line or number.
Cable broadband takes around 7 days to activate and an engineer will come to your home to install all the equipment. To avoid downtime, cancel your ADSL after your cable has been activated.
