There has been an increasing number of broadband and in particular mobile broadband providers offering free laptops as part of a "bundled" deal. Though in many cases these are great deals the old saying that nothing in life is free is worth noting. This guide will help you decide if a free laptop deal is the right option for you and take you through the factors to consider before picking a deal.
Free laptops are perfectly suited to mobile broadband, the biggest selling point of mobile broadband over fixed broadband services is the ability to connect to the internet anywhere (with coverage) making the service perfect for portable laptops. Before you take the plunge and signing up to one of these offers run through our checklist to see if a free laptop deal is the best option for you:
Contract length: At time of writing the shortest contract for mobile broadband or broadband deals with a free laptop is 18 months with most being 24 months. This means if you find yourself in an area of poor coverage or for any other reason are not happy with your mobile broadband provider you're stuck wit them for the length of your contract. If you pick a regular mobile broadband package there are plenty of offers with 12 month contracts and a few offering 1 month contracts or pay as you go mobile broadband.
Price: Though the laptop is advertised as free you do pay more each month compared to buying just the mobile broadband service and using it with your existing computer or laptop. When you combine the price of buying the laptop separately and broadband connection separately the cost is usually the same and sometimes a little cheaper. The big benefit is that you split the cost of the laptop over the length of the contract. Taking the example of the 3's mobile broadband with a free HP 550 laptop you pay £30 a month for the 24 month contract and get a laptop worth £329 so that's a total cost of £720 over the length of the contract. To buy same mobile broadband service separately for 24 months would cost £15 per month (we're basing this on their £15 per month 18 month contract option) plus £329 for the laptop giving you a total of £629. So you pay an extra £91 but split the cost in to 24 monthly payments over 2 years.
Laptop specification: For most people who want to use their laptop to go surf the web, use social networking sites, email, use programmes like Microsoft Word, Office, Excel, PowerPoint etc any of the laptops will be fine. 3 has the biggest range of laptops available and we expect the other providers to start offering a greater range soon. We've put together a comparison table so you can easily compare the spec of the different laptops available:

Mobile broadband provider and package general considerations: In general when choosing a mobile broadband service the most important consideration is coverage. You can check the coverage of each mobile broadband provider here:
After coverage you need to consider the same factors you would when choosing a fixed broadband package. Speed, reliability, customer service, contract length and download limits. Download limits are generally lower with mobile broadband packages than with fixed broadband packages and it can be expensive if you exceed your maximum download limit so this should be a major consideration if you are a heavy internet user. We've survey thousands of people to see what think of their broadband providers and mobile broadband providers and have included a customer rating for each provider in our comparison tables.
