Broadband Internet providers

Broadband internet providers are the ISPs that offer access to high speed broadband internet. Most internet connections are now broadband with dial-up becoming a redundant technology. Broadband Expert, as the name suggests, compares only broadband and mobile broadband internet service providers.

Who are the major internet service providers?

At the moment there are two major broadband internet providers in the marketplace and they are BT and Virgin. BT is one of the main providers for fixed line internet access as they own the largest telecommunications network in the UK. For most of the other internet providers out there offering internet access this means leasing the line from BT Because it owns most of the phone line exchanges in the country.

Virgin is the other big internet provider but it uses its own cable exchanges and lease out its lines to other cable internet providers. The main difference between these broadband internet service providers is that the BT network is currently run over the same copper wire cabling that standard phones use. Virgin on the other hand has rolled out fibre optic cabling from its exchanges which over time may give the provider a distinct advantage over its rivals BT. This advantage is due to the fibre optic cabling it uses transfers much large amounts of data over the same line and because it uses light to transfer data it doesnt lose its speed over longer distances like copper wire cables do.
