Guide to freebroadband offers

‘Free’ Broadband Offers

The Carphone Warehouse was the first company to offer ‘free’ Broadband in the UK through its TalkTalk brand. TalkTalk’s ‘free’ Broadband offer was soon followed by Orange Broadband (previously Wanadoo) and Sky’s free Broadband deal.

Ultimately nothing in life is ever completely free but there are some good deals out there as long as you plan on using the additional services you will be paying for. All ‘free’ broadband offers are part of a bundle deal where, by subscribing to other products, Broadband is bundled into the deal for ‘free’.

TalkTalk offers ‘free’ Broadband for customers if you allow them to take over your line rental from BT at a cost £11 per month, and also that you commit to their £8.99 monthly call plan. Similarly with Orange you need to spend at least £30 a month on your Orange mobile phone bill. With Sky’s offering there is a £40 connection fee and minimum spend of £15 per month on Sky TV channels, (if you aren’t already a subscriber).

When working out the total annual costs of these services, it’s important to remember that with Orange and Sky’s offerings you will still need to pay BT for your line rental (typically around £10 per month).

Contract Length

Please note that TalkTalk and Orange free Broadband offers require that you sign up to their phone services for a minimum of 18 months. This may be inconvenient, particularly with Orange, if you like upgrading your mobile every year. Sky’s offer is a 12 month contract and this obviously also commits you to their TV services for another year.

Download Limits

Orange and Sky have monthly download limits of 2GB, so if you plan on downloading music and video clips you will probably exceed this limit and you can’t send emails greater than 10MB with Orange. TalkTalk also has a download limit though it is far more generous at 40MB. As far as speed is concerned, TalkTalk and Orange’s free Broadband deals offer speeds of up to 8MB whilst Sky is running at up to 2MB.

Coverage

It is worth noting that not all of these ‘free’ offers may be available in your area. Of all the ‘free’ offers available, Orange currently has the widest coverage, followed by TalkTalk, while Sky has the least coverage at present.
