Voice Over Internet Protocol - VoIP
VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is a technology that allows you to make phone calls through your internet connection. VoIP has only started to become widely available to the general public in the last few years and represents a great way to cut your phone bills and take full advantage of your Broadband connection. Some VoIP services allow you to call other people using the same service whilst other providers will allow you to call anyone including mobile numbers, land lines and international calls. Many VoIP service providers will allow free phone calls to other people who subscribe to the same service.
What equipment do I need to make Internet Phone calls?
Firstly you will need a Broadband connection; once you have this there are a couple of options available. The most common, and a relatively inexpensive option, is to attach a microphone to your computer or use a call centre style telephone headset. Alternatively you can use a specialised adaptor to connect directly to your regular phone.
Who can I call with VoIP and what will it cost?
This depends on your serviced provider. Some services will allow you to call any one including international numbers and mobiles with no special equipment needed to receive the call. Others will only allow you to call other subscribers to the same service. Many services allow free calls to other subscribers to the network.
