With the rollout of the new ADSL2+ lines throughout the country the introduction of 24Mb broadband has now become something that more and more people are going to be able to access. Who will go for 24Mb broadband access?
Access to 24Mb broadband will mainly be targeting the high end user because this kind of speed is only going to truly benefit those users who need to access large amounts of data quickly such as big business users, online gamers, web-designers and file sharers. The most important thing for these users is the advancement of web-based technology to make the most of 24Mb broadband like streaming audio and video players built into website for designers and end users alike. Who will be able to access 24Mb broadband?
Although the rollout of 24Mb broadband has begun, accessibility to ADSL2+ is still somewhat limited around the country. BT has made a large number of telephone exchanges ADSL2+ ready and various internet service providers have increased access to this service with their own packages that have been unbundled into local exchanges. This, however, still means that 24Mb broadband remains limited to those that are close enough to these exchanges and the further away you get the slower the internet access is. All this means that those who want access to this 24Mb broadband service may have to wait a little longer for the service to reach them and more still will have to make do with sub 24Mbps access if they live on the edges of these service areas.
What is currently competing against 24Mb broadband?
At the moment the only real competition against 24Mb broadband through ADSL2+ broadband is cable or most predominantly Virgin. Although they currently only offer a 20Mbps they do cover a much larger area than the current ADSL2+ coverage. Now the good thing about this is that with healthy competition it is more likely that the 24Mb broadband rollout will pick up pace meaning that more people will soon be able to enjoy this high speed access a lot sooner. Also, thanks to the competition with 24Mb broadband the technology will soon be introduced in the form of fibre optic cabling to allow for those living further from an enabled exchange to still get the full 24Mb broadband speeds.
