Virgin Media has once again showed its innovation when it comes to high speed broadband by successfully trialling what has been described as the world’s fastest broadband.

Entertainment and broadband giant Virgin Media has become well known for its innovations when it comes to high speed internet and broadband. It has now been revealed that the company has successfully trialled what has been described as the world’s fastest broadband at 1.5Gbps.

The trials were carried out at what has become known as the Silicon Roundabout, which is London’s Techhub. The speeds being trialled are around two hundred and forty times faster than the average speed in the UK. The trials, which included 150Mbps upload speeds, were based on the same network infrastructure that Virgin Media already uses to provide high speed broadband and internet to its customers.

Ed Vaizey, the UK Communications minister, said that he was very impressed, adding: “The Prime Minister set out our ambition for London’s East End to become a world-leading technology city to rival Silicon Valley. Developments like Virgin Media’s will help make this ambition a reality.”

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said: “As people are simultaneously connecting more gadgets to the internet and doing more online than ever before, we wanted to explore what our unique fibre optic network is capable of. At speeds of up to 1.5Gbps, Virgin Media is delivering some of the fastest broadband in the world and, thanks to our ongoing investment, we’re able to anticipate and lead the way in meeting growing demand for bandwidth as future services and applications come online.”
