Virgin speed upgrades cause problems

Feb 28 2011 / By William Harvey

It has been announced that the recent upgrades to broadband speeds carried out by Virgin Media are causing some speed issues for customers who have upgraded.

It was recently announced by Virgin Media that it was offering new 30Mbps speeds on its broadband services, and that those currently on 20Mbps would be eligible for a free upgrade. Whilst the upgrade itself is essentially free the customer is charged a one off fee of thirty pounds to cover connection fees and also to upgrade the router. Despite the one off fee many people on 20Mbps have already or are likely to snap up the offer.

However, although the deal sounds like a good one for those that are interested in higher speed broadband it appears that there have been some problems that have stemmed from the upgrades. According to reports some of the people that upgraded from their 20Mbps service to the upgraded 30Mbps service have found that their service has become sluggish and that they are now receiving speeds that are slower than they were before they upgraded.

One customer stated: “There are clearly serious problems with the WiFi on the ‘Super’ hub. Measured with an Ethernet connection, I get a fairly constant 30Mb/s throughput. At my PC, with an ‘excellent’ (-50dB) signal level, the throughput is extremely variable but often less than 10Mb/s, despite careful optimisation.”

The customer added: “Disabling the radio and using my previous Netgear WNR2000 plugged into an Ethernet socket, the throughput is still a little variable but is around 27Mb/s. For the test both routers were located in the same position with identical settings. The WNR2000 produced a similar, but very slightly higher, signal level to the Super hub.”
