Virgin Media to withdraw from London borough due to insufficient infrastructure

It has been announced that the communications and broadband giant Virgin Media is pulling out of an area in the London borough due to what it describes as insufficient infrastructure.

According to a recent report the communications and broadband giant Virgin Media has decided to pull out of an area in the borough of London, stating that the infrastructure in the area is not sufficient to support its superfast broadband service. The media giant is pulling out of the Westminster area because it claims that the broadband infrastructure, which it rents from rival communications giant BT, is not adequate to allow for its superfast broadband and related services.

Last month customers in the area were informed that in January of next year they would have their services cut off and would therefore need to start searching for an alternative provider for their broadband, telephone and TV services. The area that has been affected is said to be a conservation area, which means that Virgin cannot consider building its own network there.

A Virgin Media spokesman said: “This is an unusual circumstance, in that it’s one of the rare areas where we don’t own the network ourselves.” He added that Virgin also rents the BT network in the Milton Keynes area but confirmed that services in that area would continue running as normal. Virgin said that around two thousand homes would be affected in the Westminster area as a result of this measure and no businesses would be affected.

Virgin said that by using the BT network in that area there was no way of providing consumers with access to its 50Mbps speeds. Regarding the decision the company also said that it was “ultimately not just about broadband — we’re only able to deliver analogue television and we’re not able to offer telephone services.”

Have you been affected by Virgin’s decision to withdraw from the Westminster area?
