Virgin Media start year as fastest provider

Feb 4 2011 / By Richard Patterson

The results of a recent study have shown that communications and broadband giant Virgin Media has kicked off the year as the UK’s fastest broadband provider.

It was recently announced by communications and broadband provider BT that it had kicked off the year on a high, having released figures that showed a sharp increase in the number of new broadband customers in the final three months of last year. The provider saw the number of new providers almost double in the last three months of 2010 compared to the third quarter of the year.

However, it seems that rival Internet service provider Virgin Media has its own good news to celebrate, having kicked off 2011 as the UK’s fastest broadband provider. The survey, which involved polling over eight hundred people, showed that the average speed of the service from Virgin Media was 7.8Mbps compared to the average broadband speed of 4.4Mbps.

In second place for speed was BE Broadband, which came as a surprise to some people who were expecting larger ISPs to take second place. BE Broadband customers enjoyed average broadband speeds of 5.8Mbps whereas BT came in at third place with an average speed of 4.5Mbps. Sky came in at fourth place with an average speed of 3.6Mbps and Orange Broadband took fifth place with average speeds of 3.3Mbps.

With regards to Virgin Media’s speed test success an official involved in the research said: “Virgin Media’s recent advertising campaign claims their broadband service is the fastest in the UK and the results of our survey confirm this.”

Do you find that broadband from Virgin offers faster speeds that previous providers you may have used? Let us know with your comments
