Following the release of recent broadband speed tests it has been shown that Virgin Media has managed to retain its position as the fastest broadband provider in the UK.

Broadband speed test results that were released for January by a broadband industry group have indicated that Virgin Media continues to offer the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, which means that the media and communications giant retains its top spot as fastest broadband provider.

The January broadband speed test results showed that the average broadband speed offered by Virgin was 7.651Mbps, which was nearly fifty percent higher than the speed of the provider that came in at second place on the rankings. O2 and BE Broadband came in at second place on the speed test rankings, with the average speed being achieved coming in at 5.113Mbps.

Broadband giant Talk Talk came in at third place, with the average broadband speed found to be 3.628Mbps. The average download speed offered by communications giant BT was just 2.982Mbps. However, in terms of upload speeds Virgin came in at second place with average speeds of 0.588Mbps, and the top place was taken by O2 and BE Broadband, with upload speeds of 0.716Mbps.

The speeds that consumers are able to achieve from the broadband provider can vary based on a number of factors, such as their location, the time of day that they use the Internet, and other factors. It is recommended that users carry out speed tests at different times of the day to try and determine what speeds they are actually achieving compared to the up to speed that their broadband provider advertises.
