Regulator findings commented upon by media giant
Media and communications giant, Virgin Media, has commented on recent findings by the communications regulator Ofcom relating to broadband speeds from major Internet Service Providers in the UK.
Recently the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, released its findings into a study relating to the broadband speeds that many customers are receiving from major ADSL Internet Service Providers in the UK. The findings showed that whilst more than half of broadband subscribers were on up to 8Mbps packages, the average speed that they were receiving was only half of that advertised.
In fact, the study by Ofcom showed that none of the major ISPs managed to provide the speeds that they were advertising. However, the Internet Service Provider that came out on top, according to the Ofcom study, was Virgin Media, which managed to provide typical speeds of between 8.1Mbps to 8.7Mbps on a service that advertised speeds of up to 10Mbps.
Following the release of the study results officials from Virgin Media commented on the findings, and warned that consumers could not trust the claims that were made by most ADSL Internet Service Providers. An official from Virgin Media stated: “Virgin Media delivers more than any other major ISP – even our cheapest broadband tier delivers double the average of our major competitors – and we are committed to making all of our marketing better reflect the actual experience our customers get.”
After the release of the Ofcom report another industry official stated: “Today’s Ofcom report shows that the days of ‘up to’ speeds may be numbered. We’re expecting real average speeds for ISPs to start becoming the norm by the end of this year.”
