New business expansion set for Virgin Media

Jun 1 2009 / By Rob Webber

As part of a new three year expansion plan Virgin Media have announced that during the next year it will be tripling the number of retail stores its currently has in the UK.

So far the cable broadband and TV giant has 27 own-brand retail stores following a number of openings recently and has said that over the next year it plans to increase this to around 70 outlets.

In order to showcase everything Virgin Media has to offer customers it will also be creating a number of new “retail lite” sites, which will also be included in its planned three-year expansion of its business.

Compared to regular Virgin Media stores these new sites, known as “stores without walls,” will be designed as permanent installations that customers will be able to walk around, although they will sell the same TV, mobile phone and broadband services.

The Ropewalk Shopping Centre in Nuneaton, Meadowhall in Sheffield and the Victoria Centre in Nottingham will be just a few of the popular shopping locations that will be home to these new stores.

The CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett said “By increasing our high street presence, we’ll be able to drive further growth whilst communicating the benefits of Virgin Media’s products in a way that makes sense for consumers. In a year when as many as one in every ten high street shops are expected to stand empty, Virgin Media is exploring new retail opportunities that showcase the possibilities of the digital home in some of the UK’s major shopping destinations.”

As well as opening new outlets in Leeds, Plymouth, Leicester, Central Birmingham and Bromley earlier in the year it will also be opening two new own-brand sites over the next few months in London.

7100 new customers were added to Virgin Media’s subscription base during the first three months of the year, which was far better than the market had expected and compares well to the 4900 additional customers is gained in the same period last year.
