Good news for some Virgin Media broadband customers

Virgin Media has recently announced some changes to its download limits for customers and L and XL packages, which will come as good news for many of its customers.

In a recent announcement communications and media giant Virgin Media has revealed that it is making some changes to the download limits that customers on certain packages can get before throttling kicks in. Those affected are broadband users on L and XL packages with Virgin, and they will now find that they are allowed to enjoy greater data download limits before the ISPs throttling policy cuts their available speed.

Previously those on the L package with Virgin Media were allowed downloads of up to 1.2BG before the throttling policy kicked in, and this has now been increased to 1.5GB. For customers on the XL package the previous download limit was 3GB before throttling kicked in, and this has been increased to 3.5GB. When throttling kicks in the available speed can be cut by up to seventy five percent, so the extra leeway will be welcomed by many users on these packages.

An official from Virgin Media said: “Today’s changes highlight how the major investment in our new network is enabling all customers to enjoy the best of today’s web, whether viewing full screen HD video on a PC or unlimited downloads. Few of our competitors’ broadband is fast enough for these applications and some of our competitors actually block higher speed applications and charge customers when they download too much.”

Another industry expert stated: “It’s good to see Virgin Media loosening the reins a little for customers on its L and XL packages. Virgin says it will continue to refine its traffic management and more changes could be on the way – it’s openess with customers it to be applauded. However, we still believe that marketing ‘unlimited’ broadband, when there is in fact traffic management in place can be misleading for customers who haven’t read the small print.”
