New high point for average UK broadband speeds

A recent report has shown that the average broadband speeds in the UK have reached a new high, which will prove to be good news for ISPs and consumers.

Past studies and analyses of global broadband speeds have shown that the average broadband speeds that are received by consumers and businesses in the UK are slower than many other countries around the world. This has resulted in industry groups and the industry sector raising concerns over how consumers and businesses in the UK may be suffering as a result of slower broadband speeds. However, one recent reports has suggested that the average broadband speed in the UK may have increased.

One broadband group has carried out broadband speed tests for the month of February and claims that the broadband speeds that were achieved reached a new high of 4.659Mbps. Hundreds of thousands of broadband speed tests were carried out over the course of the month to get the speed test data, and the testing was carried out by ordinary broadband users across the UK.

An official involved in the research stated: “We’ve seen some great results from providers during February with the majority showing improvement.” He also said that there was still a clear divide between the fibre based broadband service from Virgin Media and the broadband services from other providers, stating: “Virgin Media results go from strength to strength and have the accolade of being the first provider to break through the 8Mbps average speed barrier. We will watch with interest to see if BT’s fibre to the cabinet network can help some of the other providers to close the gap.”

The top five Internet Service Providers in terms of broadband speeds for February were Virgin, which was way ahead of the others, in first place; BE/O2 in second place, Talk Talk in third place, Sky in fourth place, and Orange in fifth place.
