Popularity of mobile broadband has rocketed

April 10th, 2008 by Richard

According to a recent report the popularity of mobile broadband has been rocketing, with an increased number of devices offering high speed access and an increased number of providers

Broadband has come a long way over recent years, and more recently many people have joined the mobile broadband revolution resulting in a massive surge in the popularity of mobile broadband. A recent report from the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has shown that there has been an increase in the number of devices that offer high speed mobile broadband access, and an increase in the number of providers offering this service.

The number of mobile broadband suppliers has risen from just 62 one year ago to around 100 according to the GSA. There are also 637 different devices available that offer mobile broadband speeds of up to 7.2MB. One provider, Three, reported that following its offer of cheap USB modems and tariffs last year it has seen a seven hundred percent increase in data traffic.

An official from Three did state, however, that it is unlikely that mobile broadband would replace standard home broadband, but that it was a separate marketplace in its own right. He said: “Although mobile broadband has seen massive growth over the past year, with prices dropping considerably, data allowances are still too low and costs if you exceed your limit still too high for most people to consider ditching their home broadband connection completely.”
He added: “However, mobile broadband - especially the pay-as-you-go options like Three’s add-on packages - are great for people who want internet on the go, but don’t want to commit to lengthy 18 or 24 month contracts that could force them to choose between going mobile or keeping their home connection.”
