Supermarket rivals major broadband providers

Leading supermarket Tesco has launched its own broadband and home phone service, setting itself up as a rival against other major broadband and communications providers.

When most people think of broadband services and home telephone providers they think of media and communications giants such as BT and Virgin Media. However, there is now a new player ready to enter this highly competitive field, but it is not the type of company most would expect to be getting embroiled in the world of broadband and communications.

In fact, the newest player in the field is the supermarket giant Tesco, which has become well known for its diversity when it comes to the services and products that it offers. Like many other major supermarkets Tesco has been offering various services such as insurance products and some financial products for some time, making it very different to the simple grocery supermarket that it once was.

However, more recently Tesco has announced that it is branching out into the banking sector, and over the next year or so plans to launch a full service bank that should include current accounts and even mortgages. Furthermore, the supermarket has now announced that it is to offer combined home phone and broadband bundles, which will make it a rival against the various other major providers in the market.

It has struck a deal with Cable and Wireless, which it hopes will make it possible to compete against other major providers, and make it a favourite choice of Tesco shoppers. An official from Tesco said: “We are actively looking at rolling out our telecoms proposition worldwide and there are conversations under way with potential suppliers for mobile and broadband.”
