Talk Talk petition gains momentum
The Talk Talk petition against disconnection of broadband customers has continued to gain momentum and now has over thirty thousand signatures.
One of the Internet service providers that has taken a lead on the fight against disconnection for broadband users that are thought to be illegally file sharing is Talk Talk, and the broadband giant set up a petition in protest following proposals from the government to disconnect those that were suspected of illegal file sharing. Internet service providers have been battling to stop proposals outlined in the Digital Economy Bill that would force ISPs to disconnect suspected file sharers if they ignored warning letters.
The Talk Talk anti-piracy petition has been posted on the Prime Minister’s website, and since it was launched has continued to gain momentum from angry consumers that want to see plans for disconnecting broadband users scrapped. According to recent reports the petition has now managed to accrue over thirty thousand signatures, and is likely to continue growing.
There are concerns that innocent broadband users could end up getting disconnected as a result of these measures, and on the petition Talk Talk has stated: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to abolish the proposed law that will see alleged illegal file-sharers disconnected from their broadband connections, without a fair trial. We think this has one fundamental flaw, as illegal file-sharers will simply hack into other peoples Wi-Fi networks to do their dirty work.”
The petition goes on to state: “This will result in innocent people being disconnected from the internet. What’s more, such a punishment should be dealt with in the proper way, in a court of law. This guilty until proven innocent approach violates basic human rights.”
