Supermarket could take on Talk Talk
A leading supermarket chain has said that it may be looking to take on Talk Talk to become a major player in the broadband and communication industry.
For the vast majority of consumers in the UK Tesco is a place where we go to get our weekly or monthly groceries, household goods, and even clothes and items for the home at a push. However, the leading supermarket chain has ambitious plans for its future, having already spread its wings by offering a range of financial services such as loans, credit cards, insurance services and more.
It seems that the supermarket giant wants to continue expanding, and its latest goal is to become one of the major players in the communications and broadband markets by taking on the Carphone Warehouse’s Talk Talk brand. The retail giant wants to launch a combined mobile phone and broadband service, but no firm details or timeframes have yet been unveiled.
The Chief Executive of Tesco Mobile, Lance Batchelor, stated: “We have looked at it and are considering it. A one line summary of my business plan is to be the leading telecoms player in the UK by any core metric, such as profitability, and that includes being bigger than Carphone Warehouse and Virgin.”
At present Tesco Mobile works alongside O2, where it exclusively sells O2 mobile products as part of a joint venture with the mobile communications provider. However, online and through its larger direct stores it sells products from other major network providers, such as contracts and prepay phones. If the supermarket chain does decide to take on the Carphone Warehouse Talk Talk service this would make it a fierce competitor in the broadband and communications field, and it would rival leading providers such as Virgin, BT, and others.
