Many broadband users not aware of P2P file sharing activities

November 26th, 2009 by Rob

According to a leading broadband provider many of its customers have no idea about any peer to peer file sharing activity going on via their connection.

Officials from a broadband and communications giant in the UK have said that many of its customers are completely unaware of peer to peer file sharing activities that are going on using their broadband connections, and this is because in many cases it is younger users or teenagers that are engaging in this sort of activity through the use of their parents’ broadband connections.

The claim was made by Talk Talk, which said that around fifty percent of its customers were now aware that their broadband connection was being used for P2P file sharing. Another reason why many were blissfully unaware of this activity was because others were piggybacking on their broadband connections without their knowledge, according to Talk Talk officials.

An official from Talk Talk said: “I think that the principles of the government’s policy to disconnect illegal filesharers are wrong because you cannot identify who is actually guilty. Practically it is unfeasible as well because we would have to go back through a huge number of logs, and even start logging data we don’t collect yet.”

He added that the company was looking at developing and launching tools that would enable parents to keep a closer eye on their kids’ activities and stop them from engaging in P2P file sharing. Many of the people that have engaged in file sharing have admitted to doing so because they want to access content that is not yet available in the UK.
