Email services heading for extinction

Nov 18 2009 / By Richard Patterson

Leading broadband provider Talk Talk has recently predicted that email services amongst consumers could be heading for extinction as a result of social networking and blogger sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Social networking and blogging websites have become household names in the UK over the past couple of years, with the likes of MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter practically taking over the lives of many broadband users who spend many hours a day on these websites. In fact, these sites have become so popular that one leading broadband provider has predicted that they will cause emails to become extinct within just ten years.

For many years many broadband and Internet users have been reliant on their email services to stay in touch with clients, friends, and loved ones. However, with people using social networking sites to stay in touch with people and provide pictures, updates, and information about their lives and their social calendar, more and more people are likely to stop using regular email services according to officials from TalkTalk Broadband.

A recent study found that around two million tech savvy people that were in their early twenties did not like being stuck behind a desk. This formed part of a study into consumers’ Internet habits. An increasing number of younger consumers have grown up with social networking sites as a means of communicating with others rather than with email as a means of communication.

An official from Talk Talk said: “Increasingly people want to send quick, short messages reaching many people in one go, and there are now better ways of doing that than via email. Based on the trends we’re seeing now, email could well be on its last legs by the end of the next decade.”
