Dunstone slated over file sharing talk
Chief Executive Officer of the UK broadband giant Talk Talk has recently been slated by a music industry official over alleged ‘scare mongering’ with his talk about the issue of illegal file sharing.
The topic of illegal file sharing is one that has been hitting the headlines on a regular basis in the UK and across the globe, with many groups and officials, companies, governments, and consumers becoming embroiled in the heated debate of the evils of file sharing and what can be done to curb it.
Of course the views of the entertainment industry, which claims to be losing money from the practice, are very different to those of Internet providers and consumers. One of the people that has really spoken out about his concerns over proposed measures to tackle illegal file sharing is the Chief Executive Officer of Talk Talk broadband , Charles Dunstone.
However, one UK music industry official has now slated Dunstone, claiming that his comments about illegal file sharing are simply resulting in scare mongering. One of the concerns that Dunstone has raised a number of times with regards to disconnection of alleged illegal file sharers is that innocent people could end up being disconnected, but Feargal Sharkey from UK Music has stated that Dunstone is creating panic where there is no need.
He stated that disconnection would only be implemented in extreme cases, and therefore Dunstone’s claims that many innocent people could end up losing their broadband service was not true. Dunstone has stated that illegal file sharers could hack into others’ wireless connections to carry out their activities, and the measures proposed would mean that an innocent party therefore got penalised. In the meantime Sharkey said that not all ISPs were against the measures, stating: “The more progressive internet providers would appear to be supportive. Ironically, the volume of unlicensed file sharing is hitting their businesses too – clogging networks and slowing broadband speeds.”
