T5 becomes largest Wi-Fi hotspot for T-Mobile
Despite its many teething problems Heathrow’s new terminal has become T-Mobile’s largest UK based Wi-Fi hotspot.
When Heathrow’s new terminal, T5, opened up earlier this year many problems were experienced. However, according to a recent report there has been some good news for the terminal recently, as it has become T-Mobile’s largest US based Wi-Fi hotspot. Every year around twenty seven million passengers are expected to pass through the terminal, many of them business travellers. For these consumers the HotSpot service will offer speeds of up to 8Mbps.
Richard Warmsley, head of internet on the move at T-Mobile UK, stated: “T-Mobile is committed to meet the increasing demand for people on the move to be able to connect to the internet when and where they need to whether for business or pleasure.”
He added: “One in four new contract customers are signing up for our mobile broadband service and user numbers are set to quadruple in 2008. It’s clear this trend is set to continue and customers now expect to be able to hook up to the internet anywhere and at any time, particularly at major transport hubs like Terminal 5.”
Ian Denchfield, head of commercial telecoms at BAA, said: “Seamless internet connectivity is an important part of our commitment to innovation and will form a key element in the future of travel. We hope Terminal 5 passengers enjoy the experience.”
The service will also be available to non T-Mobile customers and those not signed up with a partner, who will be able to use the service for one hour at a cost of five pounds or for twenty four hours at a cost of ten pounds. Officials expect many business travellers to take advantage of the facilities at T5, and airport officials predict that an increasing number of business customers will now be passing through the terminal now that it is fully up and running.
