T-Mobile being unfair over data usage on smart phones

Jan 12 2011 / By William Harvey

A number of industry officials have spoken out about how unfair T-Mobile is being by cutting its fair use limit for smart phone users.

Mobile network giant T-Mobile shocked customers and officials alike recently after it announced that it was cutting the fair use limit on packages for smart phone users. Essentially the provider has told consumers that they should reserve high bandwidth activities such as streaming and downloading for their home PCs rather than doing it via their smart phones, and encouraging customers to take out a separate mobile broadband package if they need to carry out these activities whilst on the move.

Some industry officials have been outraged by the new regulations that the provider has brought in, with the consumer campaign group, Which?, even claiming that the provider could be breaching its own terms and conditions by doing this. Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, has said that it will investigate further if it receives enough complaints from consumers, but so far it has not received any.

Which? Mobile’s Ceri Stanaway said: “Telling customers to save video for home broadband is a bit like giving a child a Buzz Lightyear toy but banning them from using Buzz’s rocket pack. One of the key selling points of large-screened smartphones like the HTC Desire HD or the iPhone 4 — the ability to watch video, like YouTube — will be severely curtailed. T-Mobile customers who took out their deal assuming they’d have access to enough data to download, stream and watch online video to their heart’s content have a right to feel aggrieved.”

I think if you read other more accurate reports you’ll see that Ofcom has received complaints. And I know for a fact that it has received at least one!
