Network upgrade investment to be made by network providers
It has been reported that a joint venture from two mobile network providers will result in a multi-million pound investment for the upgrading of networks, increasing the range of customers in the UK.
It has been reported that two mobile network providers in the UK are making a multi million pound investment in the upgrading of its 3G networks, with the contract for the upgrades being awarded to Nokia Siemens. The investment has been made through Mobile Broadband Network Limited, which is a joint venture network sharing firm that has been formed between the mobile network operators T-Mobile and 3 UK.
As a result of the venture Nokia Siemens Networks has been awarded a contract worth four hundred million pounds for the upgrading of 3G mobile networks. According to Mobile Broadband Network Limited the upgrades on the networks will enable around ninety eight percent of the population in the UK to benefit from being able to access the shared infrastructure from the network providers.
Following the upgrades, both T-Mobile and 3 UK will have increased capacity to serve the growing demand for 3G networks, which are already coming under strain as a result of the increased use of 3G enabled devices. The increased traffic has come from the rising number of people using devices such as mobile broadband dongles and smart phones in order to get online whilst they are out and about rather than being limited to internet use on the home or the office.
An official from Mobile Broadband Network Limited stated: “Smartphone and mobile laptop data traffic growth in the UK has been unprecedented, and there is every sign it will continue to grow as fast going forward.”
