Plusnet gives opinion on transparency of broadband speeds
Following the recent controversy over the way broadband speeds are advertised by Internet Service Providers in the UK, broadband giant Plusnet has now given its own opinion on the issue.
Over recent months there has been a great deal of controversy over the way that broadband is being advertised by Internet Service Providers in the UK. Many have said that the methods used to advertise broadband speeds are misleading because ISPs are using up to speeds to advertise broadband speeds, which most users never come close to achieving in reality.
One broadband giant, Plusnet, has now added its own opinion to the heated debate about broadband advertising, and has said that there needs to be far more transparency over the way in which broadband speeds in the UK are advertised. Officials from the ISP said that companies that advertise using inflated speeds face a backlash from consumers.
Nick Rawlings, commercial and marketing director of Plusnet, said: “The Ofcom code of conduct is a decent push in making retailers standardising what they can say to consumers about the speed of their service but Plusnet’s point of view is that this needs to be pushed further. In our standard practise, we give consumers a speed estimate, then another one 10 days later once their line is stabilised, to tell them what their actual line speed is. We do endeavour to go beyond the bill.”
He added: “Since the Ofcom survey, we have upgraded our entire portfolio to 20 meg which does show that speed is important to us. Speed is an important facet and there is no dodging this is a key thing going forward but how we prioritise traffic on our network means the overall experience is better.”
