Orange in hot water over mobile broadband coverage claims

November 12th, 2009 by Richard

Mobile communications giant Orange has found itself in hot water after coming to blows with a rival provider over its mobile broadband coverage claims.

For most of the people that take out mobile broadband services the level of coverage that is available from any given provider is of huge importance, as this determines where and when they can get online whilst out and about. Naturally the better the coverage the more delighted the consumer will be, and this is something that one mobile broadband giant has picked up on.

Orange has recently tried to make its iPhone offers more tempting by claiming that it offers the best coverage, in the hope that this will draw people away from O2, the other iPhone provider, and persuade them to take an iPhone with Orange instead. Orange has now come to blows with another rival provider, 3, over the claims that it has been making about its coverage.

A complaint has now been made to the Advertising Standards Agency by 3, according to a recent report. The complaint is over the claims made by Orange that it owns the largest mobile broadband network in use across the UK, and that it offers coverage to ninety three percent of the population. An official from 3 said that he was not surprised that consumers were so confused when it came to coverage.

However, officials from Orange have defended these claims, stating that the better coverage is due to the way that its masts are positioned. In fact, one official from the network provider summed it up by stating: “It’s not how many masts you have; it’s where you stick them.”
