Another broadband price increase from O2

Feb 8 2011 / By Jo Wilkes

For the second time in nearly as many months the UK communications provider O2 has once again increased its broadband prices, with new pricing that will take effect from the end of March.

Most broadband and communications customers these days are looking for low prices and value for money when it comes to their broadband and related services. Most want to get a low cost on their broadband, and with the tough competition in the market at the moment many may be able to get the affordable deals that they are after, as providers offer special deals in order to outdo their rival providers.

However, it seems that one communications giant, O2, is not thinking this way, after the company increased its broadband prices for the second time in nearly as many months. This is the second increase that O2 has imposed on the cost of its broadband services in the space of three months. The latest price hike is set to be enforced from the end of March.

The company recently increased its prices because of the VAT increase of 2.5 percent, which came into play at the start of this year. O2 has now imposed yet another increase, albeit a small one, hot on the heels of the VAT hike, which will leave some customers angry. However, the provider insists that this is something that it must do in order to enable it to continue with valuable investment that will ultimately benefit the customer.

O2 said: “The use of the internet has changed dramatically in recent years, and in order for us to continue to give you the level of service that you’d expect from us we need to continue to invest in our network to keep up with demand. Since launching Home Broadband and Home Phone we have maintained the same price levels across our packages whilst offering market leading products with unlimited or very generous download levels; however we cannot continue to maintain this service level at the same price in the current climate. Whilst the prices are increasing, we still remain competitive against other Internet Service Providers. We’re always striving to give you a great customer experience.”

Do you agree with the O2 price hike bearing in mind that it is for investment? Let us know with your comments

I rang 02 in January because my discounted broadband price of £7.50 was increasing to £15.00. They agreed that for the next 12 months i could remain on the £7.50 through speaking to the retention team. I got a letter yesterday saying from March 2011 it would be increasing to £13.00. I called them and was told I could have a discount price of £9.50 till the end of the 12 months. And if I wanted to cancel they would not charge me a disconnection fee. This is a bit of a cheek, I feel I could have charged them for breach of contract!

Not sure I’d call it a small increase. My letter from them today tells me that my broadband price is increasing from £10.21 a month to £18 a month! Worse there is no information to say what package I am actually on at the moment, as there is no £18 a month package on their site!
