Mobile Internet providers could learn from mobile broadband providers

March 23rd, 2009 by Rob

It has recently been suggested that whilst mobile broadband providers that offer access to the Internet via a laptop are enjoying great success providers of Mobile Internet that is accessed over a handset don’t seem to be getting the balance quite right.

When broadband access first became widely accessible in the UK many people flocked to get this innovative technology into their homes and workplaces, little realised that some years down the line they would not even have to be in the home or office to be able to enjoy speedy access to the Internet. These days, however, consumers have started to enjoy access to the Internet whilst on the move, allowing them to benefit from flexibility, ease, convenience, and total freedom.

Whilst some people enjoy the benefits of Mobile Internet that is accessed through their mobile phone handset, others opt for mobile broadband, which can be access via a laptop through their mobile phone provider’s network with the use of a dongle. However, it seems that whilst both technologies allow consumers to get online whilst they are out and about mobile Internet providers do not seem to be enjoying as much success as mobile broadband providers.

Research was recently carried out by the IT and business services company Logica, and the results of the research suggested that whilst mobile broadband providers were enjoying continued success even through the recession mobile Internet providers didn’t seem to be striking the balance quite as well, and were not making the best of the opportunities that Mobile Internet could provide.

It was found that loyalty amongst mobile Internet users was not as high as with mobile broadband customers, with many indicating that they would be prepared to switch at the drop of a hat if the provider did not meet their needs. One official from Logica said: “The mobile internet market stands at the tipping point of consumer usage, but it lacks the maturity and unity necessary to capitalise on the available revenue opportunity.”
