Voluntary broadband code needs to apply to mobile broadband too
Industry officials are calling for the recently launched voluntary code of practice for broadband providers to also be extended to mobile broadband providers
Earlier this month the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, announced a new voluntary code of practice of broadband providers to sign up to, which was designed to enable consumers to get more information about actual broadband line speeds that they will receive, thus enabling them to get the right broadband package for their needs based on greater clarity of information.
Around thirty fixed line broadband providers quickly signed up to the voluntary code of practice, with Ofcom officials stating: “Broadband is a thriving market in the UK. We want to encourage real clarity for consumers about the actual broadband speeds they can receive. This voluntary code is a significant step in this direction.”
However, senior officials from the broadband industry want the voluntary code of practice to be extended to mobile broadband providers as well. Officials have said that the increase of popularity of mobile broadband in the UK means that the code should naturally also extend to this service, so that mobile broadband users get the same level of fairness.
Kevin Russell, chief executive of mobile network 3 UK, said: “We welcome the voluntary code for fixed-line broadband. However, thousands sign up each week to enjoy the advantages of mobile broadband. The same principles of clear and accurate advertising should apply.”
The Internet Service Providers’ Association also mirrored this sentiment, stating: “ISPA would like to see the code of practice extended to include wireless mobile operators that provide broadband over their networks, as well as fixed-line broadband providers, to ensure minimal confusion to customers.”
