The promise of the expansion of super-fast broadband connections throughout the UK made recently by the governments Digital Britain report will also include the implementation of an improved broadband service across the whole of the national rail network, including the underground tube system.
The current mobile broadband experiences on train and tube commuters usually involves limited and erratic connections using their mobile devices but the latest plans from the government may mean that these user will soon have the same level of service that other mobile broadband users experience for their internet and email services.
The 2012 Olympic Games that will be held in London has been hailed as the most digital games ever and has been hugely instrumental in the advancement of broadband services in preparation for the upcoming event, which includes these latest plans for mobile broadband service upgrades throughout the country’s rail network.
Although the Digital Broadband network has release plans for this upgrade they are by no means new plans and there have been several plans put together for the upgrade of mobile broadband service on the tube system, with the London Underground cancel plans for investing in the service as recently as March using the current economic climate as an excuse for not spending the money.
The call has gone out from the government to the mobile broadband providers to “take the initiative” and come up with a solution to the connection problems that rail traveller experience when trying to get online with their mobile devices.
The use of next generation broadband technology is likely to be considered by the mobile broadband providers as a fix for this problem but technology like WiMAX and LTE have yet to be fully tested or implemented fully by any mobile service provider so there may be a significant delay in the government successfully putting its plans into action.
