It has been claimed by TeliaSonera that it has launched the first commercial 4G mobile broadband service in the world, which has been launched in Oslo and Stockholm.

Network operator TeliaSonera has claimed this week that it has launched the world’s first commercial 4G mobile broadband service, with the service having been launched in Oslo and Stockholm. The company has stated that this is the first time that a full commercial 4G mobile broadband services has been made available.

4G, also known as Long Term Evolution or LTE, has been trialled many times in countries all around the world by a number of network and communications companies. However, according to TeliaSonera this is the first time that this service has actually been made available on a commercial basis.

The network operator has stated that the technology will be rolled out to all of the major cities in Sweden and Norway where it holds 4G licences. The company is also expected to make an announcement with regards to when the technology will be available in Finland, where it also holds a 4G licence.

Whilst no specifics have been released with regards to the speeds that consumers will be able to get, it is estimated that it could be around ten times faster than the fastest 3G service. An official from the company said: “The use of mobile broadband in the Nordic countries is exploding and customers need higher speeds and capacity. This is why we launch 4G services in both Stockholm and Oslo. Being first out with new technology gives us unique experience that we can use on all our markets. We will continue the roll-out to offer our customers new communication services for the future.”
