It has been claimed recently that the average mobile broadband download speed being achieved by UK users is just a fraction of the speeds being promised by mobile broadband providers.
In order to gain new custom and hold on to existing customers both mobile and fixed line broadband providers often make impressive claims about the average download speeds that users could achieve. However, a recent report has claimed that in the case of mobile broadband users are getting just a fraction of the download speeds that are being promised by mobile broadband providers.
Research was recently carried out by Epitiro, and the results indicated that the average download speed that was being achieved by mobile broadband users in the UK was just 0.9Mbps. Industry officials say that this average download speed is just a quarter of that being promised by mobile broadband providers, with the typical speed being advertised by providers being 3.6Mbps. The research found that on average mobile broadband users were receiving just twenty four percent of the download speeds that had been advertised by their mobile broadband provider.
Epitiro chief executive Gavin Johns said: “This exhaustive study confirms the general consensus that mobile-broadband services are functional and, while currently slower in practice than their fixed-line competition, continually improving. That we recorded a few measurements at relatively higher speeds is confirmation that mobile-broadband technology is capable of much more.”
He added: “Given the growing interest in mobile broadband and its potential to address ‘not spots’ there will be increasing demand on operators to provide solutions that meet consumer expectations and further improve performance. Epitiro will continue to monitor mobile-broadband performance and track service levels during this exciting period of development.”
