Unwired Insight advise that by 2014 3G there will be 20 times more data traffic

According to a new report that has been recently released by Unwired Insight, 3G network operators must be able to support the huge rise over the next few year of network data traffic.

The volume of 3G data traffic will soon rise to levels that have never been seen before and many network operators will either struggle or not be able to manage this increase in data traffic, according to the report, entitled “Will 3G Networks Cope?”

The underlying implication of the increasing take-up of these services are currently causing an uneasy concern even though many mobile network operators are happy with the huge success of mobile broadband services.

For the first time, a model that forecasts the network capacities and 3G data traffic levels and can determine whether 3G network will be able to manage the increase in traffic has been developed by Unwired Insight.

The co-author of the report Dr Alastair Brydon advised that the finding in the report were quite disturbing and said “3G networks have nowhere near the capacity of fixed broadband networks and some 3G networks will quickly become swamped by traffic.”

There were a number of key findings in the report and one of these was that 3G networks were currently vastly under utilised as most of the mobile providers continue to operate using the older 2G networks. With an increase number of users now beginning to use 3G services, however, this will all soon be changing. By 2014 the level of 3G penetration in developed markets will reach 120.1 percent of the population. According to the report from Unwired insight more than 90 percent of mobile handsets and terminal will be using 3G by this date.
