Following the release of figures from the European Commission it has been revealed that the UK is performing above the EU average when it comes to broadband and 3G access.

Many people and consumer groups have complained over recent years about the problems that both consumers and businesses in the UK can face when it comes to things such as broadband access and speeds. The government has pledged to make improvements that will enable the UK to have the best broadband network in Europe by 2015, which some have been sceptical about.

However, figures have recently been released by the European Commission indicating that when it comes to broadband access and 3G mobile broadband access, the UK is actually performing above the EU average. The figures were published as part of the Digital Agenda Scoreboard. The results showed that the UK had thirty two fixed broadband lines for every one hundred people. This compared to an EU average of twenty seven lines.

With regards to 3G mobile broadband services, the report showed that with services in the UK coverage extended to ninety five percent of the population. This compared to an EU average of just under ninety percent. When it came to businesses the data showed that in the UK just over eighty seven percent of businesses had a fixed line broadband connection. The EU average for businesses with fixed line broadband was just over eighty four percent.

Other figures that were included in the data showed that in the UK around forty percent of the UK’s online population interacted with public authorities using various online methods. In Europe the figure was just under thirty two percent. Consumers in the UK were also found to be more savvy about the benefit of online services such as job hunting, accessing jobs, and banking compared to consumers in Europe.
