It has been reported that rail passengers using a popular route between Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland could soon be able to enjoy the benefits of free WiFi.

These days consumers have become increasingly demanding when it comes to getting online wherever and whenever they need to, and this is why so many people nowadays are making use of technologies such as mobile broadband services, smart phones, WiFi services, and other products and services that allow them to get online whilst they are out and about.

According to a recent report rail passengers in Scotland that are using a popular rail route between Glasgow and Edinburgh could soon be able to benefit from free WiFi access whilst on their journey, which could prove invaluable for both business and casual users that want to get online.

First ScotRail is said to have put in a request for the service, stating that the WiFi service could operate using existing masts, and could benefit millions of passengers a year, with the route being used by around seven million people a year. It is thought that ministers will soon approve the roll out of the service.

Transport Scotland is said to be assessing the plan put forward by the rail company to assess costs and determine whether it would provide value for money. Councils in Glasgow and Edinburgh have said that the WiFi service on this very popular route is much needed and has been a long time coming, with many trains on other European routes already offering these services.

One Edinburgh council official said: “A modest investment in wireless and mobile technology will produce real benefits, not only in terms of productivity but also in enhancing Scotland’s reputation as an excellent place in which to live, work, visit and invest.”
