Roaming costs too high on mobile broadband

Feb 17 2011 / By Rob Webber

It has been claimed that many consumers believe that roaming costs associated with mobile broadband services are too high with less than one fifth believing them to be fair

According to recent reports many consumers believe that the roaming costs that are associated with mobile broadband services are way too high, and that they need to be brought down. A survey was recently carried out, which showed that less than one fifth of consumers thought that the charges made for using mobile broadband in Europe were fair.

The vast majority of people have said that the roaming costs when using mobile broadband within the European Union are way too high. The study was carried out by the EU and found that only a small percentage – around nineteen percent – thought that the charges imposed were fair. Neelie Kroes, vice president of the European Commission (EC) for the Digital Agenda, is urging mobile network giants to listen to their customers.

She said that customers were obviously keen to see improvements and better value for money in this sector, particularly in the current difficult financial climate. She stated: “Consumers feel there is still much room for improvement, particularly for data roaming. I intend to ensure better roaming solutions for European citizens and businesses.”

The EC has recently stated that mobile network operators tend to set their roaming charges as high as they can under regulation. However, the Digital Agenda aims to dramatically reduce the difference between roaming charges and domestic rates by 2015.

There are applications which allow you to prevent possible bill shock of data charges. For example Roaming Guard for Symbian smartphones, No Data for Windows Mobile… A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush…
