Research shows mobile broadband users could be hit with costly bills
According to a recent report many mobile broadband users could end up being hit with costly bills as a result of their lack of knowledge about download limits on their chosen service.
With all mobile and fixed line broadband packages Internet Service Providers and mobile broadband providers put a monthly download limit in place, and these limits are based upon which package you choose. Generally the higher the speed and download limit on the package the more it will cost per month, but heavier users have little choice but to pay the higher price in order to get the higher spec package to meet their needs. Some packages come with unlimited downloads, but this does not actually mean that it is truly unlimited, as it is subject to fair usage policies.
However, a recent survey has shown that many mobile broadband users could end up being hit with costly charges and bills simply because of their lack of knowledge about the download limits on their service. The survey was carried out by a financial website, and involved interviewing around two thousand adults that used mobile broadband services.
The results of the survey indicated that almost twenty five percent of mobile broadband users did not even know that there was a monthly download limit on their mobile broadband service. Fifty percent of those that were polled also said that they had no idea what the monthly download limit on their mobile broadband service actually was. Furthermore it was found that seventy five percent of users could face hefty bills as a result of exceeding their download limit, often without even realising that they had done this.
One industry official said: “Dongle users are most at risk of incurring charges from exceeding download allowances as limits on dongles tend to be much lower than fixed-line packages”.
