New code of practice designed to protect younger users
A recent voluntary code of practice that a number of UK mobile broadband operators have signed up to will include provisions to protect younger people from inappropriate content.
Although providing their kids with broadband access is of great benefit for many parents, as this service can help with everything from entertainment for the kids to educations resources, it is also the source of concern for many people, because youngsters have been able to gain access to inappropriate content when using the Internet without supervision.
However, there could be some help on the horizon with regards to mobile broadband access. A number of leading UK mobile broadband operators recently signed up to a voluntary code of practice that was put forward by the UK’s communications regulator Ofcom. It has been that this code of practice also makes provisions to try and protect youngsters from inappropriate content through a number of measures.
The new code of practice that the mobile broadband operators are signing up to will include the implementation of more effective access controls as well as filtering on behalf of the operators. One recent review claimed that “the Code has been successful in protecting minors from inappropriate content.”
An official from the Mobile Broadband Group added: “This has been a thorough review, taking inputs from a wide range of sources. We are pleased that the Code is standing the test of time and continuing to provide protection for younger customers. In a dynamic market, though, it is necessary to continue to be vigilant and the mobile operators remain fully committed to effective self regulation in this area.”
