Mobile broadband providers to be more honest about speeds

According to a recent report mobile broadband providers are following in the footsteps of fixed line providers in being more honest about their connection speeds.

Last year saw many fixed line broadband providers sign up to a code of conduct that would require them to be more honest about the actual broadband speeds that their customers were likely to get based on a number of factors, and provide their customers with more information with regards to their broadband speeds.

According to a report from a national UK newspaper, mobile broadband providers are now set to follow suit, and are signing up to a new code of conduct that will require them to provider customers with more accurate information relating to their connection speeds that are available in the area rather than just being told what the maximum achievable speed is, which is something that the majority of users never actually get.

Over the past couple of years there has been a lot of controversy over advertised headline speeds that broadband providers have claimed to offer, and many users have said that despite the ‘up to’ speeds advertised the speeds that they actually receive based on area and a variety of other issues do not come close to the headline speed, making them feel as though they are being ripped off by the broadband providers.

However, whilst the increased honesty and accuracy from mobile broadband providers is likely to be welcomed by consumers, some officials have said that it will be difficult for providers to be completely accurate because of the factors that can affect mobile broadband speeds, such as the number of other users on the network and other unpredictable factors.
