Mobile broadband growth continues

The popularity and use of mobile broadband is continuing to rise, according to figures released in a recent report from Ofcom

Over recent months many consumers have decided to sigh up to mobile broadband, enjoying the ease, convenience, and flexibility that this form of Internet access offers. According to a recent report from the communications regulator, Ofcom, the use and popularity of mobile broadband appears to be continuing to grow, with more and more people taking on mobile broadband.
The report shows that in June around 133,000 mobile broadband dongles were sold in the UK, with sales of USB 3G broadband modems growing by around eighteen percent a month since February of this year. However, although sales figures are strong the Ofcom report also states that many of these users may be using their dongles to get online at home rather than utilising mobile broadband in the true sense.

According to Ofcom officials many of those purchasing these dongles may be younger people who share a home with others and do not want to use the same broadband connection as other people in the home, hence having to also share a bill. Many homes are also thought to have got rid of their fixed line broadband, and may be using mobile broadband within the home instead.

The cost effectiveness of mobile broadband has also been taken into consideration in the report, with figures showing that basic mobile broadband packages are available for as little as ten pounds a month with no installation fee required. The set up of mobile broadband is also far easier and faster, which may also have contributed to its popularity.

Figures show that there are now around twelve and a half million subscribers to 3G broadband in the UK, and as the technology evolves the figures are set to get even higher.
