Hull turns attention to mobile broadband

Oct 7 2008 / By Rob Webber

According to officials from Carphone Warehouse the residents and businesses of Hull have been turning to mobile broadband in order to get connected.

Officials from the Carphone Warehouse have recently reported that many people in Hull have been turning to the innovative technology that is mobile broadband in a bid to get connected. Officials from Carphone Warehouse have said that many people are turning to this technology because of lack of choice when it comes to broadband connections.

Reports from the Carphone Warehouse show that in the store in Stephen’s Shopping centre in Hull there was an increase in dongle sales of up to two hundred percent, and this is four time the national average. Before mobile broadband there was very little choice for consumers in Hull when it came to connecting to broadband, as the area is monopolised by KCOM. However, the availability of mobile broadband means that many people can now enjoy greater choice as well as the convenience and flexibility of mobile broadband.

Usage limits with mobile broadband are much lower than they are with fixed line broadband. However, despite this many people in Hull are happy to put up with reduce limits, stating that the availability of mobile broadband has provided them with an ideal solution to their broadband needs.

An official from the Hull branch of Carphone Warehouse stated: “We have seen mobile broadband sales go through the roof recently, showing that our customers and the residents of Hull want not only more choice in their broadband provider, but are also looking for better value.” He added: “Customers are always coming in and complaining they cannot access a lot of the broadband offers advertised in the Carphone Warehouse, such as TalkTalk and Virgin Media as they are KC customers.”

Another industry official stated: “The residents of Hull have suffered expensive, slow and outdated packages for years because of a lack of competition and although KCOM has endeavoured to improve services in the area – including revamping Karoo’s packages and lowering wholesale prices – this has had little impact on competition – and therefore choice. It’s great to see that the residents of Hull are using mobile broadband to break free from KCOM.”

Karoo is an embarassing disgrace. £20 a month for a service which at it’s best only delivers 500K and at worst in unusable. Karoo have no incentive to improve as they hold a monopoly and the mobile signals aren’t yet strong enough here.
