Home working on the rise

According to a number of recent reports home working amongst employees in the UK is on the rise, and this has been made possible by advanced technology such as broadband and mobile broadband services.

Whilst many people may remember the days of 9-5 working hours, where they were stuck in an office or factory all day long, things have really changed over the past couple of years and a rising number of people have been able to enjoy the flexibility and convenience of working remotely or from home, which has boosted moral for workers and helped employers hang on to good staff.

According to reports more and more people are able to work from home or work remotely these days without the need to be stuck in a particular location all day, and this is something that has been made possible by cheaper, faster broadband for businesses and the availability of mobile broadband services.

One industry official said that remote working could be done in many different jobs for at least part of the time, stating: “Virtually anything that used to be an office job and uses computers and telecoms can be done remotely for at least part of the week. Take nurses in a hospital. They have to be physically present when they’re caring for patients, but they also do a lot of paperwork. That could be done anywhere.”

Another official said that being able to work from home resulted in employees putting extra time into their work because they had more time due to not having to commute and because they valued their working patterns. He said: “What we found was that most of the time saved went back into work. These workers valued their new way of working, and to protect it they did more work.”
