LTE broadband trials begin in Cornwall

It has been announced recently that high speed LTE broadband trials have begun in Cornwall, England, and the technology, if it proves successful, could see those in the area getting speeds of around 12Mbps. The trial is being conducted by Clear Mobitel, and the trial will be centred on Caradon Hill, which is in East Cornwall.
The scheme will be using spectrum that has been made available through the switchover from analogue television to digital, and from September up to three hundred people will be able to use the first devices that are brought out. As part of the trial officials from Clear Mobitel have said that they will “assess the performance of LTE to provide viable solutions in providing high speed broadband services to the rural consumer.”
The scheme has nothing to do with the bids to get not spot areas of Cornwall connected up to broadband, which is something that is being funded through a grant from the European Union. An official from Clear Mobitel said that the scheme could potentially make a huge difference to those living and working in rural areas following the huge problems caused by the global recession.
The chief executive and founder of the company, Harpal Mann, said: “This is a trial which has global ramifications for rural economies that have been shattered by the effects of the global recession.” The company also stated that it had been working for a year to get a license to operate in the 800MHz band in the Cornwall area.
