Wi-Fi hot spots to be doubled by BT
It has been announced that BT broadband and communications giant is to double its WiFi hotspots across the UK, as demand for internet access on the move continues to grow.
With broadband customers in the UK becoming increasingly demanding when it comes to where and when they are able to get online one leading communications giant has decided to fill the gap in the market by increasing access for those that want to be able to get online whilst out and about. In a recent announcement BT has stated that it will be looking to double the number of WiFi hotspots that it operates in the UK within the next six months to meet the demand for this technology.
Already the communications giant has exceeded the half a million mark when it comes to the number of WiFi hotspots in operation within the UK, so if it does successfully manage to double these numbers in the next six months, as is the aim, then the number of hotspots that the corporation operates in the UK could exceed one million. Already BT has launched hotspots in a wide range of areas, from airports and coaches to holiday camps and more.
Dave Hughes, BT Retail’s director of wireless broadband, stated: “The real revolution is the handheld device. People are perfectly happy to get these devices out of their pockets in the street to update their social networking sites or check their emails, which isn’t the case with laptops.” He also added that although many consumers were using 3G technology to get online whilst on the move many were now looking for more reliable coverage and faster broadband speeds.
Mr Hughes also said that the potential for growth with WiFi hotspots was huge, and added that the huge number of WiFi hotspots would mean that people could get online far more easily when they are out. He said: “Pretty soon there will be a wi-fi hotspot on every corner in the UK.”
