Village can now enjoy broadband for £100

A small village located in Wales will be able to enjoy broadband internet access for the first time, and the cost per person will only be around one hundred pounds instead of the half a million that the village was originally quoted.

It has been revealed that residents of a small village situated in rural Wales will be able to enjoy access to broadband internet for the first time, and this will come at a cost of just one hundred pounds or so per connection, which would cover the cost of a new phone line and number for residents that are interested in the service.

The village of Erbistock is one of the UK’s rural broadband ‘not spots’ and had hit the headlines previously after BT quoted the village half a million pounds to connect it to broadband services. However, properties have now been connected to a different exchange, which means that the village can now get broadband at a much smaller cost than had been originally quoted.

The properties had been connected to an exchange in Bangor-on-Dee, but BT has now changed this and connected it to the exchange in Overton-on-Dee. This will now enable consumers to request broadband services from a supplier through the transfer of their connection to the new exchange. BT has said that residents may even be able to claim back the money they pay for the new phone line and number from broadband support scheme aimed at getting not spot areas connected.

A BT official said: “The re-parenting solution (whereby customer lines are migrated to another exchange) was possible in Erbistock because there was already a redundant cable in place. This was discovered during business as usual activity in the area. As network assets were already in place it allowed us to provide a broadband solution in a cost-effective manner. We do consider re-parenting a potential solution to address broadband not-spots, but in most cases it proves to be cost-prohibitive.”
