Upheaval of broadband market could push up prices
An industry expert has stated that any upheaval of the broadband market in the UK stemming from trying to break up the dominance of communications giant BT in the market could result in broadband prices being pushed up for consumers and businesses.
Over recent years both consumers and businesses in the UK have seen the price of broadband services become increasingly affordable, and the realistic price of broadband has resulted in increased take up of the technology amongst households and even businesses that may otherwise never have been able to benefit from having broadband.
However, one industry expert has recently issued a warning over the price of broadband, stating that the prices could be pushed up if the market is unsettled. According to the industry officials, Andrew Ferguson, any upheaval of the market stemming from attempts to break the dominance of the communications giant BT within the market could end up pushing up broadband prices for consumers and businesses across the UK.
He said that unsettling the broadband market would most likely ‘result in a large upheaval and probably drive the price of broadband in the UK up.’ He added that although the UK was enjoying success with some areas of broadband a number of nations could move ahead due to financial constraints. Ferguson said: ‘No other country has delivered fast broadband to all customers as yet, there is always some percentage missed out. The delays in BT rolling out next generation services should give time for competitors to innovate.’
It was recently announced that BT had signed up its fifteen millionth customer to high speed broadband, which was described as reaching yet another milestone in the broadband field.
