South Chard’s broadband to receive a boost

Jan 1 2012 / By Hazel Chua

BT Broadband has been rolling out fibre actively all throughout last year. Their new service that uses fibre technology, called BT Infinity, was also launched in 2011. Their fibre deployment was initially announced to be completed by the year 2015. However, thanks to accelerated schedules, the projected date of completion was moved back to 2014.

Part of BT’s rapid deployment is due to the government’s Broadband Delivery UK program, which was initiated by the UK government to bring universal broadband access to the entire country of at least 2Mbps by this year. The program also hopes to bring next-generation broadband services to ninety percent of the UK by 2015.

BT has now revealed more areas which will have their broadband connections upgraded. Over 26,000 households and establishments all throughout the UK will be able to access faster broadband speeds this year.

Some of these locations include areas in South Chard. The investment will boost Chard’s current broadband network to double the maximum speeds that users are currently able to access.

BT’s South- West regional director, Jon Reynolds, stated: “BT’s roll-out of faster broadband across the South West is running at a very rapid pace. Earlier this month we announced plans to make super-fast fibre-based broadband available to more than a million homes and businesses in the region by the end of next year. Now we are able to confirm a further major investment in faster broadband speeds over copper lines.”

Chris Garcia, who is the director of enterprise and skills at the South-West Regional Development Agency, said: “We welcome this news as this will help drive the economic and employment recovery of the South-West and provide businesses with a distinct competitive advantage through earlier access to world class infrastructure. It will help to deliver a wide range of benefits including higher productivity, increased innovation, improved access to new markets and stimulate business opportunities created by growth in e-commerce alongside providing greater consumer choice and faster access to e-government services.”
