Communications giant BT has announced that it is now the UK’s largest WiFi provider, with a record two million WiFi hotspots in its network.

It has been announced by the UK communications giant BT that it is now the largest WiFi provider in the UK, and has clocked up a record two thousand WiFi hotspots as part of its network. These hotspots are available in many different places from homes and city centres to businesses, at retailers, and even underground.

The latest place to benefit from the WiFi hotspots from BT is Charing Cross Tube station, with passengers now able to get online from the ticketing hall, as well as platforms for the Northern and Bakerloo lines. This is part of a six month trial which forms part of a project between London Underground and BT.

BT’s WiFi network is now the biggest in the UK, and includes hotspots from BT FON Wi-Fi Community, BT Openzone, plus BT Openzone hotspots via the BT Business Hub. The hotspots are used by many retail giants and High Street or hotel chains, including Starbuck’s coffee, Hilton hotels, Ramada hotels, Thistle hotels, Welcome Break service stations, and more.

Gavin Patterson, chief executive officer, BT Retail, said: “Demand for wireless access is growing at a record rate, we’ve have added more than 780,000 hotspots in the last six months and will continue to meet the demand as more and more smart-phone, laptop, tablet, iPod and e-reader users choose WiFi to stay connected when they are out and about. What’s more our BT Total Broadband customers have free and unlimited access to the largest WiFi network in the UK included in their broadband package.”
