No ban on BT broadband ad despite complaints

July 16th, 2008 by Richard

Despite a number of complaints the Advertising Standards Agency has decided not to ban a recent advertisement relating to BT broadband.

According to a recent report the Advertising Standards Agency has decided not to ban a recently launched advertisement relating to BT broadband. The advertisement highlights the parental control features offered by BT Total Broadband, but some people have complained that it encourages parents to allow their kids to use the Internet without any form of supervision.

Over twenty complaints were received about the advertisement, which shows a young girl storming to her bedroom and shutting herself in to use the Internet whilst shouting to her mother that she doesn’t understand her. The mother expresses concern to her partner, and when he asks what she is worried about the mother says “I am worried that she might…be a geek”.

The advert then cuts to a voiceover, which states: “Unlike some broadband providers BT Total Broadband comes with parental controls as standard for as long as you want them, so you know your kids are protected.”

Some of the complaints were relating to the advertisement being misleading because it indicated that the parental controls could protect children from all threats relating to the Internet, and most of the complaints also related to the fact that the ad seemed to be encouraging parents to let their children use the Internet without supervision, which could result in themr coming to harm.

However, BT officials have said that the ad is not designed to encourage parents ot allow their kids to use the Internet unsupervised but to encourage them to ensure that parental controls are in place. The communications giant has also managed to escape another ban relating to its business broadband, after complaints that children had been having nighmares after seeing the advertisement, which features the Gremlins and the star of Dragon’s Den, Peter Jones.
